Erica Sadun, an iPhone developer, has created a pretty simple and handy application for measuring iPhone 4 signal strength and variation. The application show three signal indicators, each indication the real time signal reception on iPhone 4.
The one at top shows current signal strength of iPhone 4 ranging from -80 dB to -120 dB, dB(Decibel) is the measuring unit in acoustics and electronics devices. The second indication is a numeric representation of signal bars (one to five), numbers will increase and decrease acc to visible signal bars on the top of iPhone 4. The third indication at the bottom represents Apple's graded signal strength ranging from 0 to 29 which changes with the actual antenna signal strength measured in dB at the top.
Have a look at the video demonstration of app. It works pretty well, as soon as the lady holds iPhone 4 in left hand touching its bottom left corner, phone signals starts dropping. She called this position Kung Fu Grip of Doom :) as iPhone 4 signals are directly effected after gripping it in this manner.
This app further strengthens the claim that iPhone 4 signal reception issue is probably a hardware issue and it can't be fixed via a software upgrade which Apple is planning to role out soon.
