iPhone 4 – All You Need to Know

Steve Jobs unveiled iPhone 4 at (World Wide Developers Conference) WWDC 2010. I should better rephrase it like - Steve Jobs re-unveiled iPhone 4 today, as it has already been extensively reviewed by many websites, but that was the hardware part only. iPhone 4 is powered by iOS 4. Here is detailed review of iPhone 4 specs and features.

Design: Stainless Steel Rim and Black Glass

The design is almost similar to the prototypes leaked earlier. It contains a stainless steel rim and black glass. iPhone 4 steel casing indeed looks striking, Steve Jobs mentioned that the steel casing works as part of iPhone 4 antenna system for 3G and Wi-Fi reception, so it will improve the reception of iPhone 4.

Overall, the iPhone 4 is 34% thinner than the previous iPhone 3GS and it's 3 grams heavier. Apple is calling it as slimmest smart phone on earth.

Hardware: A4 Processor

iPhone 4 is powered with Apple A4 processor, it's the same processor which is used in iPad. An A4 processor has two core units. A Cortex-A8 - main processing unit and a PowerVR SGX 535 chip - it handles the HD graphics. Both of these chips are integrated on same processor, so they could communicate with other electronic entities of the processor. This essentially reduces the processing time between the devices and also it reduces the power consumption, hence making iPhone 4 a fast device than its predecessors and it consumes less battery as well.

Battery Life

iPhone 4 battery is much bigger, its 16% bigger than iPhone 3GS. With the A4 processor and new display, it results in a longer battery life: Apple claims 40% more talk time. These are the figures from Apple:

  • Talk over 3G: 7 hours.
  • Browsing over 3G: 6 hours.
  • Browsing over Wi-Fi: 10 hours.
  • Video: 10 hours.
  • Music: 40 hours.
  • Stand-by: 300 hours.

Improved Display

Improved Display
Retina display, 3.5-inch screen with resolution of 960?×?640 pixels. iPhone 4 has four times as many pixels as the current iPhone 3GS display. This improves graphics of apps, icons on home screen, images, games etc.

Noise Cancellation

Like many other smart phones, noise cancellation features has been introduced. It basically suppress the surrounding environment noise during a call, aiding in improving the voice quality.

Camera: 5 MP camera with additional Front end camera

iPhone 4 Camera
iPhone 4 has 5 mega pixel camera with improved picture quality, camera sensor is bigger than iPhone 3GS. Mush awaited LED Flash has also been introduced. There's a front end camera as well for video conferencing, with standard VGA resolution. This camera will be used with third-party applications.

Software: iOS 4

Software iOS 4
iPhone 4 comes with new OS - iOS 4, there is a whole set of new features in iOS 4. We've already covered them in detail, the biggest new feature is, of course the multi-tasking. New iOS 4 will accommodate all hardware improvements, like HD display - icons will automatically scale themselves with an improved resolution.

Here are some new features introduced in iOS 4.0 in addition previous ones:

Video Calling
With the introduction of front end camera, video calling with iPhone 4 is a reality now! It's one of the biggest features of iOS 4, however there is a limitation - it works iPhone 4 to iPhone 4 over Wi-Fi, Apple claims that in the future it will be available over 3G.

Video Recording - iMovie

iPhone 4 will be able to record HD video with an editing app named iMovie! It has a whole set of new features, iMovie for iPhone works on high definition 720p right. You can use it to cut the video clips, add automatic Ken Burns effects for still images and a music soundtrack taken from your iPhone's tunes. After you are done with your movie, you can export it to 360p, 520p, and 720p.
